The Amazing Machbanai
A Chess-Playing Robot
Taylor University, Spring 2000 COS 280 - Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Machbanai is a robot that plays chess against humans. Three major
areas of AI are used: vision, game-playing, and robotics. A camera
mounted above a chess board takes photographs before and the human
opponent's moves. The before and after images are compared to
determine what move the human player made. A decision-making
component uses an alpha-beta minimax search to choose an appropriate
countermove. This move is transmitted to a robot constructed from 2
Lego Mindstorm Robotics kits to physically move pieces on the board.
This process is repeated until the game is completed.
